Because I teach technology integration, I also feel that it is important to encourage “change.” Most veteran teachers are making a huge adjustment in their teaching style in order to cater to 21st century learners. I believe in alternative ways of learning. Everyone learns differently, as an instructor, flexibility is a must. I spent several years working with disabled children. I have also been a teacher at an adult men’s prison, taught various professional development workshops for educators and worked in charter schools teaching grades K-8 as well. These experiences with a variety of all kinds of people, various education levels, socio-economic backgrounds and learning disabilities really helped me in recognizing when to adjust my instruction based on the learner. Learners must be able to begin where they are. It is only from that perspective that you can truly understand how to help them and observe their learning style. Lastly, as I work to integrate technology, my efforts must be for technology to support learning by doing, learning by conversing, and learning by reflecting. These things are essential for retention. Moreover, my ultimate goal is to ensure that teachers understand that technology is a tool to supplement learning, not dictate it.
